Pierre Orbe stands as a trailblazing figure in American education, a proud first-generation American born to Ecuadorian parents and raised in New Jersey. His journey from a neurobiology student with aspirations to attend medical school to a nationally recognized principal in New York City is not only remarkable but deeply rooted in a personal mission: to uplift and support those with learning differences—especially inspired by his autistic older brother.
Pierre Orbe’s academic foundation was laid at Drew University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Neurobiology. His early intention to pursue a medical career was driven by the desire to better understand neurological conditions and apply that knowledge to improve the life of his brother. However, a pivotal suggestion from his father altered the trajectory of his life. Encouraged to teach while saving for medical school, Pierre Orbe, principal, entered the classroom—and it was there that he discovered a profound calling. He realized that education offered a direct, daily opportunity to create change in the lives of students, particularly those navigating learning disabilities and complex life circumstances.
This realization spurred a shift in direction that would go on to influence thousands. Pierre applied and was accepted to New York University’s prestigious Goldman Sachs Teaching Fellowship, through which he earned a Master’s in Science Education. Armed with scientific expertise and a growing passion for educational equity, Pierre spent the next decade shaping young minds and mentoring teachers at Talent Unlimited High School in New York City, where he served as Assistant Principal. Over ten years, he cultivated a leadership philosophy grounded in empathy, accountability, and high expectations for all students—especially those historically marginalized by the traditional school system.
In 2018, Pierre Orbe of New York took on what many considered an insurmountable challenge. He was appointed as the third principal of DeWitt Clinton High School (DWCHS) in the same academic year, at a time when the institution was on the brink of state-imposed closure. With a disheartening 46% graduation rate and only 23% of students earning college credits, the school was in dire need of revitalization. Where others saw decline, Pierre saw opportunity.
Through visionary leadership, collaborative mentorship, and a relentless focus on student success, Pierre Orbe, principal, and his handpicked team of assistant principals sparked a historic turnaround. By the time the class of 2023 graduated, DWCHS had achieved a 97% graduation rate. Over 90% of students were earning college credits before graduation, and school morale had undergone a dramatic cultural shift. Pierre’s leadership turned DWCHS into a model of urban school renewal—an achievement recognized citywide and increasingly on a national scale.
But Pierre’s vision didn’t stop with academic statistics. Under his leadership, DWCHS expanded and launched a wide variety of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs aimed at preparing students for both college and careers. He led the development of certified pathways in Nursing, Business, Computer Science, Health, and Digital Arts. These programs were designed not just with technical rigor, but with student passion in mind—integrating real-world application, industry mentorship, and cutting-edge technology. The CTE expansion also included innovative vocational tracks in Culinary Arts, Barbering, Tattooing, MVP Lifeguarding, and Electrical & Plumbing, each supported by modernized facilities and curriculum.
In tandem with these academic and vocational developments, Pierre Orbe, principal, invested in the physical and cultural revitalization of the school environment. He spearheaded the construction of new batting cages and a state-of-the-art fitness center to promote student health and engagement. Hallways were redesigned, digital display boards were installed, and artistic elements—like door wraps and school apparel—brought life and identity back into the building. The DWCHS Clinton Social YouTube channel, launched in 2023, became a platform for student storytelling, elevating student voice and school spirit through media.
Pierre Orbe of New York has consistently made strategic use of digital media and data transparency. He developed platforms to showcase Regents exam success, internship outcomes, and real-time academic progress. Through projects like the Self-Regulated Learning Model Pilot, he trained teachers to implement evidence-based practices that enhance student motivation and goal-setting, measuring outcomes through mindset surveys and assessment performance.
In addition to his impactful school-level leadership, Pierre Orbe has consistently demonstrated thought leadership on the national stage. He is a proud fellow of the Cahn Fellowship for Distinguished Principals and has completed the Harvard ILC and the ALAS School Leadership Academy (SLA). He is currently working toward his CAEL Certification through Harvard. Pierre has also been accepted into the Men of Color in Educational Leadership (MCEL) program and will join Cohort 4 in 2026, deferring his participation due to being honored with the prestigious Principal of the Year award in New York State. Furthermore, he has been selected to participate in AASA’s Aspiring Superintendents Academy® for Latino and Latina Leaders as part of the 2025–26 cohort. Pierre’s efforts to engage families and communities have also been groundbreaking. His Family Profile Survey initiative, developed with guidance staff, gathered data to identify and replicate support systems for students who lack traditional family structures. His ongoing action research with the Myerhoff Web Page Project explores how family dynamics correlate with academic success, and how schools can intervene meaningfully.
To combat chronic absenteeism, Pierre Orbe of New York implemented incentive-based programs, such as Attendance Avengers and gift card recognition for honor roll students, alongside weekly themed lunches and branded school gear to reinforce community identity and positive behavior.
A published scholar and education thought leader, Pierre Orbe, principal, has authored research on literacy planning, internship impact, and CTE curriculum design.
